Flotation Device: Uranians

Description

Finally, I get this done. I don't know if it was the idea of making humanoid pterosaurs or my extreme laziness that kept pushing this back, but at least I finally get to make a new datasheet for Flotation Device. Moving on:

In Flotation Device, all 11 planets in our solar system have native, sentient life on them, and go by names based on Greek mythology instead of Roman lore. For the first time since I started this, I finally don't have to confuse you guys, because Uranus is actually named for a titan in Greek Mythology, and so, the uranians are one of the only two races in the setting that get to use their original demonym. TL;DR, the uranians are humanoid-pterosaurs-in-space with extremely long arms and the natural ability to levitate, even in the presence of gravity. They are stereotypically obsessed with bending the laws of nature and are specialists in genetic engineering. Their cloning and biotechnology is superior to every other race, and they are a major player along with the cronians, poseidonians, and hadesians in the ongoing Centaur Conflicts for control of space beyond the asteroid belt. The uranians are responsible for the existence of genetically-engineered species such as the persesians, basiliskans, and minosians. Now, for those of you who like to read, here's the unabridged version:

Biology:
Uranians are a reptilian species with some avian traits that they have adapted in their evolution. It is believed that they evolved from a species of large-winged, flying reptiles, similar in form to the extinct pterosaurs of Gaia. The most striking physical aspects of uranians are their long arms, crested skulls, large beaks, and the ability to float and levitate, even when under the effects of gravity. The long arms of a uranian are a leftover from their ancient ancestors, as somewhere down the line uranians lost the need to use their wings, which evolved into lengthy arms instead. Uranians levitate due to a strong presence of helium in their bodies and bloodstream, which turns a uranian almost into a humanoid balloon. It is believed their ancestors used their wings in conjunction with this ability to dominate the skies of their gas giant homeworld, but modern uranians are no longer naturally capable of guiding their weightlessness with flight. Males and females of the species only have a few differences aside form their reproductive organs, as both are very slender of frame. Males can usually be identified by larger crests on their skulls, while females have wider hips. Uranians typically have yellow-ish eyes, and their skin colors usually range from blue-green to emerald. They are omnivores, and are capable of breathing hydrogen, helium, ammonia, and methane. The main advantage uranians enjoy from their genetic engineering is that they can help make their bodies more adaptable to certain situations. Many uranians can breath oxygen or nitrogen by the year 2121, but are not naturally able to do so, instead having given themselves that ability through bioengineering. It is not rare to find uranians taking on various mutations and alien traits that they have given to themselves through such means. For example, if a uranian female has breasts, they're not real.

Civilization:
Throughout much of their history, uranians lived under the rule of scholar-kings, in what could best be described as a hereditary technocracy. Around 1985 (in human years, because I haven't bothered coming up with calendar systems for the other races), uranians were caught in the Wars of the Two Hemispheres, a dual-conflict of both succession crisis and territorial feud. It became a world war that ended with one king coming to dominate the planet. When uprisings sparked up decades later, the Rex shared his power with an alliance of representatives elected by his subjects. This treaty was the Concord of Uranus, and changed their government to what it is now. the Uranian Concord is still the government of Uranus by 2121, and rules the planet and her moons. From 2045 to 2080, Uranians terraformed and altered several of their moons and engineered several vassal species, such as the Persesians, Basiliskans, and Minosians. Each of these races has since pledged their allegiance to the Concord, but it's not a total rule, and many people have been known to leave the Concord for their own purposes. A sentient of any species is allowed to join the Concord. Since 2108, the Concord has been at war with the Cronian Empire and the Poseidon-Hades Axis in the Centaur Conflicts, as each faction desperately tries to control the unknown numbers of celestial objects between the Ares-Zeus Asteroid Belt and the Oort Cloud. Like the Empire and the Axis, and almost every other government in the system, the Concord is at war with the Erisans. Uranians utilize a lot of biotechnology and bioweapons in their armed forces, and they maintain a large host of genetically engineered kaiju and dinosaurs.

Culture:
Uranians are a curious and exploratory lot. Their penchant for genetic engineering is expressive of their desires to push the boundaries of nature and explore the hidden potentials of all life. It's theorized that their ideals spring from proto-civilizations from when they still had wings, and soared high above the other animals of uranus. After reaching the uppermost clouds of their atmosphere and discovering something more far above that, it inspired uranians to strive to fly higher than the highest stars in the heavens. This has since been translated to simply learning new things and discovering the many wonders of the galaxy, but it works for most of them. Oftentimes, uranians come across as unfeeling tinkerers who prod and toy with life as they bend it to their will. This especially comes up during arguments between them and their vassal races, who are often of the notion that they were designed to be slaves to serve at the beck and call of their uranian masters. To this day, no one has truly understood just why the vassal races were engineered to begin with, but uranians usually treat their sentient creations as equals, so tensions are relatively low. Uranians have a tendency to take and intrude without thinking, and casually dismiss other peoples as they impose on them. Such mentalities led to the beginning of the Centaur Conflicts as Uranians began colonizing Cronus' moons without hesitation or warning. Like every other race in the system, they think of themselves as the good guys, but are very morally grey. Out of every race in the system, uranians have likely had the least contact with humans, and the two consider one another mysterious and untrustworthy people.

That should be enough for now. I'll try to add more about them as I go on, but they won't factor into my next stories, so other writers may be interested in using them. I wanted to get this one uploaded so I'd have some structure before I make a datasheet for the Persesians, who were invented by :icongreybitter:. At first, I had the idea of making them more like mythical trolls or elves, but they began taking on more avian, reptilian, and saurian features when I decided to link them with the Persesians. I also felt this got to be a double-whammy: I get to fit :icongreybitter:'s race into the story, and in case :icondivides: wants to get involved in Flotation Device, the uranians have a godzilla attack somewhere on their planet about once every other week, so he can write one of his famous kaiju stories. Oh, and the name "uranian" applies to this species native to Uranus. The term "uranusan" is sometimes used instead to apply to this species and the vassal races of Uranus' moons, collectively, but it's not a phrase used too strictly or too often.

That's about it. I hope you like them, and I'll try to get at least the Persesians drawn next. Below are the other species datasheets I've completed up until now:
